Our History

Kallista Primary School has proudly served the community of Kallista and the surrounding Dandenong Ranges for more than a century. Established in 1919, the school began as South Sassafras State School in a small local hall, welcoming just 30 students. In 1925, the school was renamed Kallista State School, inspired by the Greek word “Kallistos,” meaning “most beautiful.”

From those humble beginnings, Kallista Primary has grown into a vibrant, community-focused school nestled in the heart of the Sherbrooke Forest. Our beautiful natural surroundings have always been an integral part of our identity, inspiring generations of children to learn, explore, and appreciate the world around them.

Over the years, the school has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of students and families. New classrooms, playgrounds, and learning facilities have been added, while our strong values of Creativity, Respect, Trust, Perseverance, and Compassion have remained at the core of everything we do.

One of the school’s proudest achievements has been its involvement in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, introduced in 2007, which has become a defining feature of our hands-on, nature-connected education. The program encourages children to grow, harvest, prepare, and share healthy food — combining sustainability, teamwork, and joyful learning.

Throughout our history, Kallista Primary School has continued to embody its community spirit. Parents, teachers, and volunteers have worked together to create an environment that celebrates learning, creativity, and care for both people and the planet.

Today, more than 100 years after our doors first opened, we remain true to our roots — offering quality education in a nurturing, natural environment, where every child is known, valued, and inspired to achieve their best.

We were drawn to Kallista for its beautiful setting and community feel, but it’s the teachers and programs that make it special. Our son settled in quickly and absolutely loves the kitchen garden and music classes.
