Numeracy is the knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that students need in order to use mathematics in a wide range of real-life situations. At Kallista Primary School, we believe that an understanding of numbers and a solid knowledge of mathematical concepts enable children to make authentic connections between related ideas and to apply their understanding in new and unfamiliar contexts.
At Kallista Primary School, our maths program:
Aims to engage students in math by making it fun and exciting for both students and teachers.
Allows for all students to experience success, with lessons adapted to suit different levels of ability.
Incorporates the proficiencies of Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning, which are fundamental to learning mathematics and working mathematically. These are applied across all three strands, Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.
Is led by teachers who’ve participated in focussed Professional Development, providing teachers with up-to date skills and understandings required for effective program implementation.
The most powerful way for students to learn maths is to have the opportunity to discover and make connections for themselves. At KPS, our teachers help children develop independence and investigating skills throughout all the levels.
